The van der Linden retainer from Ortholab Zuid

The maxillary incisors and canines are fixed in their positions by the acrylic at their palatal surfaces and the well adapted labial bow of 0.7 mm thickness.

A rigid fixation of the plate in the anterior region is essential to maintain the proper position of the front teeth. The required anchorage is obtained by the recurrent parts of the labial wire that run in the undercuts at the cervical regions of the canines. These parts of the wire have a clasp function. sufficient room should be available between the lateral incisor and canine passage of the wire without interfering with the occlusion. If not, the passage of the wire should be located distal of the canine where usually sufficient room is available. The recurrent part with the clasp function will then be located at the first premolar.

The manibular anterior teeth should contact the plate in habitual occlusion. When needed some acrylic should be removed or added. The premolars and molars should occlude wihout anyinterference. Therefore the three-quarter clasp runs distally around the last molar. With this clasp a buccaly erupted second molar can be moved palattaly and distally. The acrylic palatal of such tooth should be removed but not at the adjacent first molar. In situations with a good position of the second molars and a solid occlusion of the posterior teeth the acrylic at the premolars and first molars should be widely removed in the visit following the one of the placement of the plate to allow these teeth to settle in naturally.
